About
MAIA
Laureen and Barbara DeBuono dreamed of
making a difference in Africa for many years. Using Laureen's
business, fundraising and legal skills and Barbara's medical
and public health expertise, along with their combined entrepreneurial
spirit, they have created THE MAIA FOUNDATION: Investing in
solutions to improve health and health literacy of women in
sub-Saharan Africa. MAIA is a philanthropic enterprise that
will identify and then strategically invest in programs and
organizations that will become effective agents of change
for women and their health in sub-Saharan Africa. MAIA's focus
is improved maternal care delivery, access to comprehensive
women's health services and life skills coaching for young
women. MAIA is curently funding programs in Uganda and Rwanda.
| "To
date The MAIA Foundation has made over $312,000 USD worth
of grants to "on the ground" community based
organizations and international NGO's working to strengthen
families, provide women with access to reproductive health
education and services in Uganda and Rwanda." |
Our Plans for
the Future
MAIA plans to funds programs in Uganda and Rwanda with grants ranging between $5,000-$25,000 per fiscal year in areas such as obstetric fistula, reproductive health, gender based violence, safe childbirth, prenatal care and education. Grantees will be visited annually in order to monitor progress and identify new programs for funding next year.
Our Progress to Date
We continue to interview experts in global women's health and family planning. MAIA has attended the Women! Deliver conference in London, England and the RAISE conference in Kampala, Uganda in 2008, which were gatherings of leaders who are devising ways to improve women's health, assure safe pregnancy, and childbirth. The MAIA Foundation website has been updated and we will continue to communicate to current and future donors regarding the ongoing investments in sub-Saharan Africa. Fundraising achievements have brought MAIA closer to its goal of sustained funding to programs in Uganda and Rwanda.
