About
MAIA
Laureen and Barbara DeBuono dreamed of
making a difference in Africa for many years. Using Laureen's
business, fundraising and legal skills and Barbara's medical
and public health expertise, along with their combined entrepreneurial
spirit, they have created THE MAIA FOUNDATION: Investing in
solutions to improve health and health literacy of women in
sub-Saharan Africa. MAIA is a philanthropic enterprise that
will identify and then strategically invest in programs and
organizations that will become effective agents of change
for women and their health in sub-Saharan Africa. MAIA's focus
is improved maternal care delivery, access to comprehensive
women's health services and life skills coaching for young
women. MAIA is curently funding programs in Uganda and Rwanda.
| "To date The MAIA Foundation has made over $312,000 USD worth of grants to "on the ground" community based organizations and international NGO's working to strengthen families, and to provide women with access to maternal and reproductive health education and services in Uganda and Rwanda." |
What We Fund
MAIA funds programs in Uganda and Rwanda with grants ranging between $5,000-$25,000 per fiscal year in areas such as obstetric fistula, reproductive health, gender based violence, safe childbirth, prenatal care and education. Grantees will be visited annually in order to monitor progress and identify new programs for funding next year.
Our Progress to Date
MAIA continues to learn more about the most critical issues that women confront today in the areas of safe childbirth, obstetric fistula, prenatal care and education and reproductive health, from experts in global women's health. This enables MAIA to best support programs that reduce maternal mortality and improve health literacy in sub-Saharan Africa. We also continuously evaluate our grantees to ensure the quality of MAIA funded programs along with program outcomes. We hope to work with our grantees to present program results at one or more global maternal health conferences in 2013.
